This is a basic course for those who want to learn how to use adult Attachment Interviews (AAI) in their work, as well as how danger, trauma and adaptation are conceptualized in the DMM model.

Course participants will learn how to create a chronology of danger based on DMM-Anais (i.e. adult attachment interviews adapted to DMM) and interpret key information from the interview results for therapy planning. Participants will also learn the basic principles of formulation and justification of therapy based on the VM model, in relation to individual work and work with families

This course lays a solid foundation for further study of the DMM model

Course structure
The course is designed for 60 hours, of which:

  • 20 hours of online lectures (five classes of 4 hours each)

  • 30 hours of independent work (including reading assignments with specific learning goals)
  • 10 hours of work related to course assignments
The course focuses on working
with client groups such as:
families with complex trauma in their history
young parents
young people at risk
families from which children were taken
families in which one or more family members are dangerous to others

Before the start of the course, participants will be asked to arrange an AAI interview with a colleague. Full information about this assignment will be provided.

Results
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Understand the structure and purpose of the AAI Adult Attachment Interview, its history and the foundations of attachment theory

Understand how to use and apply AAI in your work, as well as how to do it correctly from an ethical point of view and within your competence

Read AAI, build and analyze
a chronology of danger
based on AAI content

Use the AAI questionnaire and the chronology of danger to understand the developmental conditions that precede disorders/difficulties and to find opportunities for prevention (that is, moments when a risky path of development can be changed to a more adaptive and flexible one)

Understand the difference between
symptom-based and function-based formulation

To use the principles of integrative therapy DMM in the preparation of a therapy plan

Have a basic understanding of the elements of the AAI interview classification and how the classification is compiled
in a clinically meaningful sequence

To understand the new approaches to prevention and therapy proposed by DMM. Topics such as psychological trauma, unlived loss and grief, eating disorders, ADHD, PTSD, autism, problematic sexual behavior, etc. will be considered

Understanding psychological trauma through the lens of DMM, for example, redefining lack of resolution as an opportunity for new exploration of danger/safety and anxiety/comfort. Also rethinking the symptoms of trauma as a signal that something needs to be learned after a dangerous event

Understand how to choose the sequence, type and intensity of sessions based on the principles of DMM therapy and tools such as: the danger scale, Maslow's pyramid, the zone of proximal development, family-system representations, five levels of family functioning, the scale of parental argumentation, the gradient of interventions and the information processing model for interventions to parents

Understand the concept of resilience and improvement of biopsychosocial functioning through the lens of DMM
This course only provides an introduction to how to use the AAI interview. To learn how to conduct interviews at a higher level and correctly

Clark Bame, PhD, Member of UKCP, BPA, Registered Psychotherapist (UK Psychotherapy Council) and registered Senior Trainer and Clinical Supervisor of the British Psychodrama Association. He is a member of the faculty of the Institute of Family Relations. Clark spent twenty years studying attachment theory and the Attachment Maturation and Adaptation Model (DMM) with Dr. Patricia Crittenden. He developed and conducted with Tony Morrison a popular four-day attachment-based interview course. Together with Tony Morrison, Clark wrote the book "Attachment-Based Practice with Adults: Understanding Strategies and Fostering Positive Change" (2011/2023, Pavilion). He is also the co-author of the book "Attachment-Based Practice with Children, Adolescents and Families" (Pavilion, 2022). Clark has published widely on various topics related to attachment theory, psychodrama, treatment of offenders, supervision, teamwork, applied theater, and group work methods. He is also co-director of the Birmingham Psychodrama Institute, an educational psychotherapy organization in the UK
