The Dynamic-Maturational Model of Attachment and Adaptation (DMM) was developed by Patricia Crittenden, a doctoral student of Mary Ainsworth. The model offers a contemporary perspective on the phenomenon of attachment and provides a deep understanding of the functionality of attachment strategies.
Crittenden expanded on Ainsworth’s ideas about individual differences by arranging the ABC strategies (Avoidant, Secure, Ambivalent), identified by Ainsworth, into an arch-shaped schema. She further enriched the model with a range of strategies that emerge with age, which is why the model also focuses on the maturation of attachment. One of the distinctive features of the DMM is its unique classification of attachment strategies
The DMM model is unique in that it views an individual’s behavioral and mental patterns as the most effective strategies for responding to danger across different life contexts and developmental stages
The DMM model has the capacity to expand and deepen the knowledge of psychotherapists who use an attachment lens in their work
